Save EMA! Parliament votes on scrapping EMAs, 11 January!

On 11 January, Parliament will vote on scrapping Education Maintenance Allowances. So far this date has not been widely publicised; it looks like the Government is hoping to get the vote through without too many people noticing!

There have been a lot of protests recently, and there will be more in the New Year, but this one is incredibly important. Please invite as many friends as possible to the Facebook event for this and post what you’re doing locally on the wall.

There’s not long to go until 11 January, and it’s early in the New Year, but let’s mobilise the biggest possible protest movement to stop the Tories in their tracks and save EMA.

What you can do:

* If you can get to Central London, we’ll be rallying there. Why not organise a Walk Out from your school or college to come and join us? And university students and trade unionists should come too!

* If you’re outside London or too far out to come into the centre, organise Walk Outs to go and protest at your local Town Hall – of, if that’s not possible, protest at Town Halls after school. Again, university students and workers can also take part.
We should demand that councils release statements calling for EMA to be retained, and pledge that even if the vote goes through they will refuse to implement the cut and keep paying it! This is the same demand that trade unionists are placing on Labour councils: that they refuse to carry out the Tory cuts.

* There may be other possible options, like finding your local Conservative or Lib Dem office, and protesting outside or occupying it. Or in December students at Camden School for Girls even occupied their school as part of the protests!

  1. the link to facebook doesnt seem to work, also, there is a national walkout to save EMA the 26th i thought; whats happening with that?

  4. The facebook link does not work. Is there a facebook page?

  5. “This is the same demand that trade unionists are placing on Labour councils”: maybe… but what will they do by themselve? They’re able to call for a mobilisation to protect the students from the violence of the state and there’s a lotof workers who are ready to rally with you. So what? Is their only proposal to send an email to Milliband?

  6. Just so you know that facebook group has been deleted like alot of groups involving any kind of resistance to the government. It shows up for the admin but no1 else can see it.
Keep making more all over the place thats how we did it. and draw alot of attention to the fact that it’s being censored.

  7. Do you have a source for the date? I’ve checked on the parliament website and all I can see which is similar for the 11th is an adjournment debate on ‘Pre-and post-16 benefit entitlements for disabled people: the case of Joanna Cranfield’. I haven’t seen anything on either of the two main Save EMA campaigns’ websites. It would help to know if it was definite so we can get things organised. Thanks.

Is a link to an NCAFC Save EMA group for Jan 11th

  9. What time and where is the rally on the 11th and is there more info about the one on the 26th??

  10. I’ve asked John Hemming MP on his blog, and he says there is not a vote on the 11th – “It could be a statutory instrument committee, but then it would move to the main house at another stage.” (this came up in a conversation about EMA).
I’m trying to find out what the truth is here, if anyone can shed any light on it.

Is there actually a protest going on the 11th. If so why isn’t it more widely advertised?

  12. Jame Gumb says:

Why isn’t this in your important upcoming dates? Especially when it’s written here
